The Merton Concert Band, based in Wimbledon, was formed in 1981 and was the brainchild of a former mayor of the London Borough of Merton. The band had strong links with the famous Mantovani Orchestra through its star trumpeter, Stan Newsome, who was the founder conductor of the band. Stan died in 1989, but the band still maintains his motto that ‘the audience should be entertained, not educated’. Reflecting Stan’s love of music that the audience could go home singing, the band specialises in big band favourites, show music and light classics. In 2005, the band was delighted to obtain the services of notable trumpet player Martin Bunce as its principal conductor. Martin moved away from London in 2016, ending his long reign as conductor. The principal conductor is now Arnold Bibby.
